The Navajo were the first tribe to adopt the squash blossom necklace design, but other tribes, such as the Zuni and the Pueblo, adopted it by the early 1900s. The Navajo began using the Naja symbol on their horses' headstalls before it became the centerpiece of the squash blossom necklace.
